VRM (Vendor relationship management) - it has become clear that this skill is necessary in the changing landscape of IT. The reason I mention this is that IT organizations are consistently moving more responsibility for the operation of their infrastructure into the hands of 3rd parties. It’s not a new concept, we have been doing so since the dawn of the IT world. It started with Telcos, IBM time sharing, migrated to web hosting and COLO, and now the cloud. IT organizations must remake themselves into a VRM organization, or partner with those that take this very seriously. Remember ownership of the infrastructure doesn't necessarily translate to accountability and responsibility.
